Marketing Club just got back from a very successful tour of Theo Chocolate, Seattle's original chocolate factory. We learned about the operations of one of America's only bean-to-bar chocolate factories and tasted delicious chocolate every step of the way, from Venezuelan dark chocolate to coconut curry chocolate to a whiskey ganache.
Thanks to everyone who went and hope you enjoyed all the free chocolate!

In case you missed Marketing Club's tabling last week, we have a very exciting project we'd like to share with you! We are teaming up with Campus Ministry to conduct some market research on how students perceive the organization, its promotions, and its breadth of programs. The results of this research will give us a better idea of what CM is doing right and in what areas it could improve, and eventually, we hope to work with CM to provide a marketing strategy and events more catered to your interests. A committee of marketing club members have designed a survey to measure these perspectives and we'd be extremely grateful if you could take two minutes to fill it out. Not only will your input help improve campus life, but Campus Ministry is offering an additional incentive by providing gift cards to popular Capitol Hill hangouts. Any survey responses provided before March 1 will be entered into a drawing for one of three $25 gift cards to Cupcake Royale, Stumptown Coffee, or Piecora's Pizza. Complete the survey online at:http://studentvoice.com/su/campusministrystudentperceptions Best regards,SU Marketing Club, Service Committee
The Marketing Club had the incredible opportunity to tour Boeing's Everett plant last Friday and got to see (a tiny portion of) the largest building in the world. We learned about the history of this nearly one-hundred-year-old company and saw firsthand how it pioneered six sigma and lean production and mastered logistics to become one of the largest global aircraft manufacturers and the second largest aerospace and defense contractor in the world.
A big thank you to everyone who participated in the tour! Have an idea of another local company for Marketing Club to tour? Email us at members@sumarketingclub.com !
Family owned and operated since 1982, Piecoras Pizza is the "slice of New York in Seattle."
As a local businessman and entrepreneur, Danny Piecora spoke to Marketing Club to explain his experience about starting his successful business and how his marketing strategy is what drives his business.
Simple and to the point Mr. Piecora spoke from his heart and his family in which from our executive team our top take always included:
Danny's strategies were a refreshing change from the by-the-book rules for operating a business that we are always taught. He reminded us that overall, what matters most is that the business is connected with the customer and the customer likes the product.
The way to get attention is to get your customer to taste the product (handing pizza out to stopped cars.
Couponing isn’t always a good thing, because it reflects the kind of customers you expect and want.
It's all about the supply chain - ingredients make all the difference in the competitive restaurant industry.
“Prepare to go out of business”- if it doesn't work the first time with a business, learn from it and try again.
Join the Marketing Club in our upcoming tour of the all-new Boeing plant in Everett! The tour will be on February 8th from 12:00-4:00pm, and lunch and transportation will be provided. The tour will revolve around Boeing's operations strategy and its new assembly line.
Tickets are $10 (originally a $25 value) and are first-come, first-serve. To reserve a spot, email members@sumarketingclub.com or speak to one of the officers at our meeting this Thursday.
For more information, check out the event listing on our Facebook.
The Marketing Club is excited to welcome Danny Piecora to speak at the club's next meeting on Thursday, January 24 from 12:20 to 1:20. Danny Piecora is the founder of Piecora's Pizza, Capitol Hill's hottest pizza joint, and will share with the club his experience in entrepreneurship and business management.
The meeting will be in Piggott 103 on January 24 from 12:20-1:20. Come hungry as Piecora's Pizza will be served.
Marketing Club wishes you a happy 2013 as we reign the new year with exciting speakers, events, and meetings! Stay tuned to learn what we have planned for Winter Quarter and how to get involved!
Sales Night was a success!! With a full auditorium full of students, teachers, graduates and businessmen and women there were great speakers and an open place which great topics such as: debunking sales myths, the entrepreneurial side of sales, innovative technologies to effective sales, applying marketing concepts to sales, the future of selling, careers in sales and networking with sales representatives were discussed.
Top Take-Aways:
Despite the name, sales is not "tricking" someone. Sales is essentially about building a personal relationship between a company/brand and a customer.
77% of people in sales jobs enjoy going to work every day - a number that is significantly higher than that of the average profession - and only 7% of people in sales jobs dislike their work.
Sales really require soft skills and hard skills and balancing the two.
The sales profession is constantly changing. The idea of the used car salesmen and cold calls are become less important, while modern sales is becoming more about strategy, customer intimacy, and value propositions.
Many jobs include selling but do not have sales in the name. Just because "sales" isn't in a job title, doesn't mean that it's not fundamentally a sales job - customer service, donor relations, etc. are all in the sales family.
While sales is an excellent profession in itself, it's also often used as a stepping stone for climbing the corporate ladder - most CEOs start off in sales.
Lots of valuable information was sold to the highest listener!
Don't miss out on Sales Night this Thursday from 6-9pm in Pigott Auditorium! Even if you've never considered a career in sales, this is a great opportunity to learn more about business and to meet/network with managers from companies like AT&T, Sprint, Zones, and C.H. Robinson.
What: Sales Night 2012
When: Thursday, November 15. 6-8pm, Pigott Auditorium
Following the event will be a Networking Reception from 8-9pm
Sales Night provides a unique opportunity for Seattle University students to find out more about careers in sales and interact with alumni:
Learn more about the sales function from speakers and panelists from Salesforce.com, Starbucks, Amazon.com, Seattle Public Radio, and other organizations.
Participate in a sales networking reception where you can meet recruiters who hire full-time sales professionals and/or interns.
Thanks to everyone who attended our first meeting of the year! Getting involved in campus activities early on in your college careers will open many resources and opportunities, so kudos for starting the year strong!
We ran out of time at the end of the meeting, but I wanted to elaborate on a few upcoming events that may be of interest to you.
First off, we have SU's first (annual?) Sales Night. The event will be Thursday, November 15 from 6-8pm in the Pigott Auditorium, followed by a Networking Reception from 8-9pm.
Sales Night provides a unique opportunity for SU students to find out more about careers in sales and interat with alumni and hiring managers from Salesforce.com, Starbucks, Amazon.com, Seattle Public Radio, and other organizations. Even if you have never considered a career in sales, I highly encourage you to attend this event as marketers work side-by-side with sales representatives. It's a fantastic opportunity to practice your networking, and, who knows, maybe some of the organizations may even be recruiting (AT&T, anyone?).
If you have any questions about SU Sales Night 2012, please contact the Albers Placement Center by stopping by Pigott 331, calling 206.296.5687, or emailing apc@seattleu.edu. I've also attached the flyer which has a list of sponsors that will be attending.
SEATTLE UNIVERSITY
Campus Ministry
Second, Marketing Club is proud to be working with Campus Ministry on an exciting market research/brand identity project. We will be working directly with CM to design and execute a marketing plan from start to finish. This is a large project, and we're hoping to get as much help as possible, so if you have any interest in market research, promotions, graphic design, consulting, or just want to get involved and meet other club members, we'd love to work with you on this project!
We will be holding a brainstorming session on Thursday, November 8 from 12:25-1:25pm to go over our objective. If interested, please contact Mustafa Abid, VP of Service, at abidm@seattleu.edu. We will send out more information shortly with the meeting location and other key details.
Other than that, we're glad you were able to make our first meeting and loved your feedback and suggestions! It looks like we have a very strong club for this year, and we hope to be able to work with all of you on future projects and events.
Have any recommendations or know of any projects the Marketing Club should take on? Let us know!
(Top: Eric, David, Monica, Lin, Julia; Bottom: Fun items provided by Waggner and Edstrom!)
Despite being on a Monday afternoon, during the common lunch period, there was a great turnout for the Seattle University Alumni now working at Waggner & Edstrom Worldwide:
Monica Brown: Senior Account Executive, graduated in 2004
Rickey Bird: Senior Account Executive, graduated in 2006
David Byrd: Account Coordinator, graduated in 2006
Each openly talked about their career experiences since since graduating, especially during the time in which they dealt first-hand with their career choices as the economic rescission hit, and each had great advice that can be used for any business major from a first-year to their last year.
Top Take-Always:
--Know that it can take time to get on the "track" to the career you want; be patient
--Agency-style positions: Clients, project based, you = the brand VS. In-house positions: Departmental, 1 focus, tool for product sales
--What's important? Internships. Online presence. Read a lot, Learn the language.
--Waggner & Edstrom's internship position hires about 85% of their interns!
--You've heard it once, and you'll hear it again: It's all about who you know - networking!
--In an interview, do some research and have an opinion!
--Know that you probably won't have a job in exactly what you study in school, be flexible
"Careers in Marketing" Alumni Panel
When: Monday, October 22, 2012
12:30 - 1:30pm
Pigott 201
The SU Marketing Club is proud to sponsor the upcoming "Careers in Marketing" panel, put on by the Albers Placement Center.
Join us next Monday to learn from a panel of Seattle University Alumni with 4+ years of career experiences in advertising, public relations, and corporate marketing!
The panel will consist of Rickey Bird (class of 2006), Monica Brown (class of 2004), and David Byrd (class of 2006), all of whom have enjoyed great success in the marketing industry at companies like Microsoft and Seattle Times. They are currently account executives at Waggener Edstrom Worldwide, a Seattle-based public relations firm with 17 offices across the globe.
We strongly encourage you to attend this panel on Monday, Oct. 22 to hear their advice to current students (after all, it wasn't too long ago that they were in your shoes) and to ask questions of your own about the world after university.
The Seattle University Marketing Club would like to welcome the class of 2016 and wishes everyone an exciting start of term!
The Marketing Club is proud to serve as a resource for students of all grades and majors through the advancement of one's professional, academic, and social life, and hopes that you will be able to join us for our exciting, upcoming executive speakers, headquarter tours, and social events! We look forward to getting to know you better throughout this year, and we highly encourage you to talk to one of the officers, drop us an email, or post a comment on our Facebook page with any feedback or suggestions on how the Marketing Club can better serve you.
Thanks, and welcome to Seattle University!
P.S.: Stop by our table at the Albers New Student Orientation and the Club Fair!
We just wrapped up our last club meeting of the year and have some big news to share with everyone who couldn't make it.
First, we were joined by Dean Phillips and the marketing faculty to present the senior awards to past president William Tsang (club leadership) and Zena Shelton and Anna Klutho (academics). So huge congrats to all of them!
Dean Phillips then introduced Jim Sinegal, co-founder of Costco, who spoke to the club about his experience as an entrepreneur and the value proposition that has made Costco so successful. Both funny and inspirational, Jim Sinegal fantastically wrapped up our last meeting of the year and we hope to work with him more in the future with his new position at Albers.
We also announced the newly elected 2012-2013 marketing club board! Returning officers are Lin Wilson (President), Alex Walz, Kalison Shilvock, Elyse Graf, Maddy Williams, and Xiao "Fiona" Fu. Newly elected officers are Paul Singh, Eric Beekman, Julia Paleski, and Mustafa Abid. Marketing professor Jay Lambe will be taking on the role of the new club Advisor. We have some great plans for next year and look forward to starting off Fall quarter at a sprint!
And finally, with less than a month of school left, I'd like to thank our graduating marketing club officers - William Tsang (President), Zena Shelton, and Max Stowell - as well our faculty advisor, Dr. Toh, as he departs for his permanent cruise. Thanks for a great year!
