First Meeting = Success!

Thanks to everyone who attended our first meeting of the year! Getting involved in campus activities early on in your college careers will open many resources and opportunities, so kudos for starting the year strong!

We ran out of time at the end of the meeting, but I wanted to elaborate on a few upcoming events that may be of interest to you.

Sales Night

First off, we have SU's first (annual?) Sales Night. The event will be Thursday, November 15 from 6-8pm in the Pigott Auditorium, followed by a Networking Reception from 8-9pm.

Sales Night provides a unique opportunity for SU students to find out more about careers in sales and interat with alumni and hiring managers from Salesforce.com, Starbucks, Amazon.com, Seattle Public Radio, and other organizations. Even if you have never considered a career in sales, I highly encourage you to attend this event as marketers work side-by-side with sales representatives. It's a fantastic opportunity to practice your networking, and, who knows, maybe some of the organizations may even be recruiting (AT&T, anyone?).

If you have any questions about SU Sales Night 2012, please contact the Albers Placement Center by stopping by Pigott 331, calling 206.296.5687, or emailing apc@seattleu.edu. I've also attached the flyer which has a list of sponsors that will be attending.

SEATTLE UNIVERSITY
Campus Ministry

Second, Marketing Club is proud to be working with Campus Ministry on an exciting market research/brand identity project. We will be working directly with CM to design and execute a marketing plan from start to finish. This is a large project, and we're hoping to get as much help as possible, so if you have any interest in market research, promotions, graphic design, consulting, or just want to get involved and meet other club members, we'd love to work with you on this project!

We will be holding a brainstorming session on Thursday, November 8 from 12:25-1:25pm to go over our objective. If interested, please contact Mustafa Abid, VP of Service, at abidm@seattleu.edu. We will send out more information shortly with the meeting location and other key details.

Upcoming events can also be found on our FB: http://www.facebook.com/sumarketingclub/events. Please 'like' our page and feel free to invite your friends to upcoming events!

Other than that, we're glad you were able to make our first meeting and loved your feedback and suggestions! It looks like we have a very strong club for this year, and we hope to be able to work with all of you on future projects and events.

Have any recommendations or know of any projects the Marketing Club should take on? Let us know!

Thanks and have a great Halloween!

"Careers in Marketing" Panel Recap

(Top: Eric, David, Monica, Lin, Julia; Bottom: Fun items provided by Waggner and Edstrom!)

Despite being on a Monday afternoon, during the common lunch period, there was a great turnout for the Seattle University Alumni now working at Waggner & Edstrom Worldwide:

Monica Brown: Senior Account Executive, graduated in 2004
Rickey Bird: Senior Account Executive, graduated in 2006
David Byrd: Account Coordinator, graduated in 2006

Each openly talked about their career experiences since since graduating, especially during the time in which they dealt first-hand with their career choices as the economic rescission hit, and each had great advice that can be used for any business major from a first-year to their last year.

Top Take-Always:
--Know that it can take time to get on the "track" to the career you want; be patient
--Agency-style positions: Clients, project based, you = the brand  VS. In-house positions: Departmental, 1 focus, tool for product sales
--What's important? Internships. Online presence. Read a lot, Learn the language.
--Waggner & Edstrom's internship position hires about 85% of their interns!
--You've heard it once, and you'll hear it again: It's all about who you know - networking!
--In an interview, do some research and have an opinion!
--Know that you probably won't have a job in exactly what you study in school, be flexible
--Be receptive to criticism

Careers in Marketing Panel

"Careers in Marketing" Alumni Panel
When: Monday, October 22, 2012
12:30 - 1:30pm
Pigott 201

The SU Marketing Club is proud to sponsor the upcoming "Careers in Marketing" panel, put on by the Albers Placement Center.

Join us next Monday to learn from a panel of Seattle University Alumni with 4+ years of career experiences in advertising, public relations, and corporate marketing!

The panel will consist of Rickey Bird (class of 2006), Monica Brown (class of 2004), and David Byrd (class of 2006), all of whom have enjoyed great success in the marketing industry at companies like Microsoft and Seattle Times. They are currently account executives at Waggener Edstrom Worldwide, a Seattle-based public relations firm with 17 offices across the globe.

We strongly encourage you to attend this panel on Monday, Oct. 22 to hear their advice to current students (after all, it wasn't too long ago that they were in your shoes) and to ask questions of your own about the world after university.

Hope to see you there!
